Ian Piper

Ian Piper  is an artist who paints in the tradition of the Scottish Colourists with a regard for draughtsmanship and vibrancy of pigment that was so characteristic of their work. Richness in the application of paint is another aspect of his work together with the textural quality of the paint surface which gives his paintings such a feeling of vitality.

Scotland with its Highlands and Islands provides constant inspiration for Piper’s work  and he is able to trace his family’s Scottish lineage back to the time of the Glorious Revolution in the eighteenth century.

As with the Colourists Piper has a belief in good draughtsmanship and this has always informed his approach to painting throughout his career. In this aspect he counts himself fortunate to have studied at the Slade in London where the principles of drawing established by Sir William Coldstream were still being taught long after such ideas had fallen out of fashion elsewhere. In addition to painting in oils Piper also paints in watercolours and has been a member of the Pure Watercolour Society since 1999. Marine painting is another subject that has an appeal for Piper and he has been a member of the East Anglian Group of Marine Artists since 2009 and is currently the Hon. Treasurer of the Group. Piper has exhibited widely and exhibitions and galleries where his work has been shown include:- The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition                                                                                                                                                                                The Royal West of England Academy Open Exhibition                                                                                                                            The Royal Cambrian Open Exhibition                                                                                                                                                                                  The Paisley Art institute Summer Exhibition.                                                                                                                                                                                                           His work is held in private collections in England,Scotland, North American, Norway, Holland,France and Switzerland
